NEW at St. Michael’s, Silverstone

For a long time we have been aware that there are many people in the village for whom Sunday means work, sporting activities especially for youngsters, family activities, visits to or from grandparents or separated parents. Attendance at a church service on a Sunday becomes extremely difficult for them.

Some of these families, we feel sure, would like the opportunity to take some time to look at their faith and to connect more to God. To offer an alternate to Sunday worship, from February for a trial period we are planning to hold a “Thursday Half Hour” Service on the second Thursday of each month in the Church at 7.30 in the evening.

We hope that this time will be suitable for whole families to attend and promise that it will last no longer than the half hour in the title. There will be a couple of worship songs, a bible reading and discussion (NOT a sermon!) and some prayers. It will be as informal as we can make it.

Do come along and see what we mean. The dates for the next two months are 9th February and 8th March.

Please let anyone you think would be interested know of this.

Christingle Activities

A November Sunday afternoon is not the time to be thinking of Christmas!  Admittedly it was the first Sunday of the Advent season, but nonetheless Christmas seemed a long way off! A group of 33 children and a number of adults gathered at Silverstone Church room to make Christingles, Christmas decorations and cards, and to make music!

Everybody seemed in good spirits, the children were excited, the adults a bit apprehensive, but all in all there was a good sense of fun and laughter in the air. The three groups rotated to each of the activities in turn, each spending about thirty minutes at the activity. There was colouring and sticking going on, word searches and creativity.

One by one the Christingles were made, and as each one was finished, carefully placed in a wooden box ready for transporting to the Church. The sweets were sticky, but they were threaded onto the cocktail sticks, and then stuck into the oranges. The candles gently pushed into the prepared fruit, with their protective foil skirts, and finally the red ribbon circulated around the centre of the “world”.

As each group moved onto the next activity, those going into the church sampled the sweet singing of the children accompanied by the organ.

The afternoon activities were only the preparations for the Christingle service itself! At 5 o’clock, the children had gathered in the church, joined by parents, families and friends. The Church almost full, the service began. The most inspiring moments were when the lights were out and only the flickering light of Christingles and Advent Ring lit the darkened space, a true reflection of how the Christ-light can bring hope and joy to a world of darkness.

A collection was taken for the Children’s society, and I think all agreed it had been a time of fun, joy, laughter and of being together in one objective – to celebrate Christingle!

The benefice is now working towards another activity in the summer! We are holding a planning meeting on January 20th in Silverstone Church Room at 7.30pm, we would love to see you there if you would like to be involved!
